COVID-19 UPDATE

All Star Pediatrics has taken multiple steps to deal with Coronavirus Pandemic.   Please read below the changes. 
These were all done to minimize any risk to patients and staff. 


WELL VISITSALL DAY NOW!  (New Concierge Checkin)
We continue to see only "WELL" children in the office with masks as extra precaution. These appointments are scheduled with plenty of time in between patients to minimize patient contact as well.  We also have a Concierge service now where you call from your car when you arrive.  We check you in and give you a room number.  This way you walk straight into your room, bypassing the waiting room and check in. 
 
Please keep your appointment. Due to this pandemic, we are expecting a very busy summer and want to make sure that your kids are still being monitored closely and caught up on vaccines.  Bring only the child with an appointment and one parent (feel free to have the other parent join the conversation on speaker phone).
 
Again we are only seeing "WELL" visits in the office.  Each patient/family is called and "screened" the day before.  We ask that those with illness or any family member with illness or recent exposure to anyone that has tested positive be rescheduled. 
 

SICK VISITS: TELEHEALTH OR CAR VISITS AFTER 3 PM
All sick visits will be screened by the nursing team and then rescreened by the doctor to decide whether the visit is necessary and/or can be accomplished via TELEHEALTH.
Sick visits are available via telehealth all day long, and in the car/parking lot for any patient with respiratory symptoms/fever after 3PM (and the physician wearing full protective gear including masks, goggles, and gloves.) Call us first! We are here to help you!  We look forward to meeting you where you are to provide the care you need!   


TELEHEALTH (all day and after hours) :
We started telehealth and LOVE IT!!  We encourage you to register your children,  so we can expedite an appointment if appropriate.  Our team is scheduling telehealth visit after we speak with you to determine if it is appropriate.  Please register your children by downloading the Anytime Pediatrics app from the app store and registering.  You must register with our practice and our practice code is 4448.  Once you have registered please contact our office to schedule an appointment.   
 

 

In the days ahead we ask that you exercise patience and understanding as we adapt to this new model of care.  We encourage you all to do your part in social distancing by staying home as much as you can and by encouraging your friends and neighbors to do the same. Together as a community we can make a difference in the spread of this illness.

Wait--it's the end of July already?  One more month or less until the kids go back to school?  Let's get out and play!

According to research, free play can improve children's cognitive, emotional and physical well-being.  Play as a family is also very important for family bonding.  And from more research, the more outdoor play/exposure to nature that we have, the better the effect that nature has on us to reduce stress and improve concentration.

Remember outdoor play?  Climbing trees and onto rocks, jumping in puddles and making mud pies, picking grass or wildflowers, laying down and making shapes out of the clouds--not so common anymore in our over-scheduled lives and the very over-scheduled lives of our children.

So get out to the yard, the park, or the beach.  Go for a family walk.  Play hopscotch.  Collect some rocks or acorns.  Start a game of Tag, Red Rover, or Ghost in the Graveyard. PLAY!!

Today is my last day at All Star Pediatrics.   I joined the practice 30 years ago, when I was an inexperienced doctor just out of residency and a young mom of small kids.

It has been an honor and a privilege to provide medical care to you and your children.  Some of my early patients now bring their own children to me.  That continuity of care, watching your children grow and helping in some small way to raise them along with you, is the most joyous and rewarding aspect of being a pediatrician.

I cannot thank all of you enough for trusting me with your children.  I have learned as much from you as I have tried to teach and guide you.  I have laughed and cried with you, and I have loved every minute of these 30 years.

I will continue to write this blog for All Star Pediatrics.  You may see me in the office with my own grandchildren, or see me out in the community.  Please say hi, because I will remember you always!

i look forward to the next chapter in my life--family time, travel, and part-time work with Lurie Children's Hospital.

Water/fluid intake is always important, but even more important in these hot dry summer months.

Water comprises about 70% of our total body weights.  Recently, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended total fluid/beverage intake instead of water-only intake.  Obviously, the beverages we drink should be mostly water or unsweetened beverages.  An easy way to make sure we are drinking enough fluids is to make sure we have clear urine.

Recommended daily water intake by age:

5-8 years----5 cups (1 liter)

9-12 years--7  cups (1.5 liters)

13+ years---8-10 cups (2+ liters)

Adults---men 13 cups (3 liters) and women 9 cups (2.2 liters)

With moderate exercise we should add 1.5 to 2.5 extra cups per day.  Drink up!

Summertime...and the living is...easy?  Not for most families, because between sports, camps, sleepovers and the like, the one thing that usually suffers is family time.

Only 59% of families eat dinner together at least 5 times per week.

Much research has been done on the benefits of eating together as a family. For families who eat a meal together at least 4 times per week, it has been shown that:

---There is decreased risk for obesity, substance abuse, delinquent behavior, depression and eating disorders.

---There is an increase in healthful eating, GPA, chances of graduating from high school, self esteem, and children feeling like their parents are proud of them.

Family meals are our chance to realx, reconnect, recharge, laugh, tell stories, and to develop a sense of who we are as a family.  Dinner conversation is a more potent vocabulary booster than reading!

So invite your family to dine together--you will be glad you did!
